The difficult part of MFOM exam preparation is rarely finding material to read. It is turning a broad, clinically demanding specialty into decisions you can make accurately under assessment conditions. You need to recall principles, interpret workplace context, weigh risk and communicate a defensible recommendation – often within a single scenario.
A strong preparation plan therefore does more than increase revision hours. It connects core knowledge with the way Occupational Medicine is actually practised: assessing function, considering evidence and uncertainty, balancing individual and organisational needs, and keeping professional ethics at the centre of every decision.
Start MFOM exam preparation with the assessment blueprint
Before building a timetable, establish precisely what you are preparing for. Review the current examination guidance and map the syllabus into topics you can actively assess yourself on. Avoid treating every topic as equally urgent simply because it is on the list.
Some areas form the foundations of repeated clinical reasoning. Fitness for work, disability and reasonable adjustments, work-relatedness, health surveillance, ethics, law, risk communication and safety-critical work can appear in many different forms. If these principles are unclear, a candidate may recognise individual facts in a question but still choose an answer that is impractical or professionally unsafe.
Create a simple topic map with three categories: secure, developing and high priority. Be honest. A topic is not secure because you once attended a teaching session or highlighted a guideline. It is secure when you can explain the principle clearly, apply it to an unfamiliar case and identify why plausible alternatives are weaker.
This approach also protects your time. If you are already confident with a topic, maintain it through spaced question practice rather than repeatedly rereading it. Give your deeper study time to areas where your reasoning breaks down.
Learn principles before memorising detail
Occupational Medicine includes legislation, guidance, exposure risks, clinical conditions and management pathways. Detail matters, but isolated facts are fragile. They are easily lost after a long clinic or a busy on-call weekend.
Start with the governing principle. For example, when considering health surveillance, ask what purpose it serves, which workers may benefit, what action could follow an abnormal result and where the limits of the programme lie. When considering fitness for work, separate diagnosis from functional capacity, current risk, workplace controls and the possibility of adjustments.
That framework helps you respond when a question changes the industry, job role or medical condition. The case may involve a driver, a healthcare worker, a construction operative or an employee working night shifts, but the professional reasoning remains recognisable.
Visual learning can be especially useful here. A concise diagram of a surveillance pathway or a decision tree for work capability is often easier to retrieve than several pages of notes. Use visual memory systems to simplify complexity, not to oversimplify it. A decision aid should prompt the right questions, rather than replace clinical judgement.
Turn each topic into a workplace decision
For every major area of study, practise completing the same mental sequence:
What is the occupational question? What information is needed? What are the risks to the worker, colleagues and public? Which controls or adjustments are realistic? What recommendation is proportionate, evidence-based and clearly communicated?
This sequence is particularly valuable in questions where more than one answer appears partly correct. The best answer is usually not the most restrictive or cautious-sounding option. It is the one that addresses the material risk, respects confidentiality and autonomy, stays within professional scope, and is workable in the workplace described.
Use SBA questions as a reasoning tool
Single best answer questions are not merely a way to test memory at the end of revision. Used well, they reveal the exact point at which your thinking goes off course.
After each question, do not stop at correct or incorrect. Ask why the best answer is best, what feature of the stem should have guided you there, and why each close alternative is less appropriate. A wrong answer may reflect a knowledge gap, but it may also reflect misreading the task, overvaluing one clinical detail or overlooking an ethical issue.
Keep a concise error log. Record the topic, the decision error and the corrective principle. For instance, rather than writing, ‘Got hand-arm vibration wrong’, write, ‘I focused on symptoms but did not consider exposure history, function and the purpose of surveillance.’ This gives you something useful to revisit before a mock examination.
Question banks are most effective when spread across your preparation. Early on, use them slowly and openly, with explanations available. Later, work in timed blocks. The trade-off is important: untimed practice builds understanding, while timed practice builds selection discipline and stamina. You need both.
Build a revision rhythm around a working life
A demanding Occupational Health role rarely leaves space for idealised study days. A plan that assumes three hours of revision every evening is likely to fail, and failure to follow it can damage confidence unnecessarily.
Instead, establish a weekly rhythm that combines focused learning, retrieval and application. A longer session can be used to learn a new topic or work through a case. Shorter sessions are well suited to revisiting diagrams, answering a small set of SBA questions or reviewing your error log. Consistency matters more than occasional heroic revision weekends.
Give each topic more than one encounter. First exposure creates familiarity; retrieval makes knowledge available; case application makes it clinically useful. Returning to a subject after a few days, then after a few weeks, is more productive than trying to perfect it in one sitting.
It also helps to separate learning from reassurance. Reading notes you already know can feel productive because it is comfortable. Deliberate recall is less comfortable, but it tells you what will be available when you face a new scenario. Close the notes and explain the approach aloud, sketch the pathway from memory or answer questions before checking the teaching.
Make mock examinations clinically meaningful
A mock examination should be treated as a diagnostic exercise, not a judgement on whether you are ready. The score is useful, but the pattern behind it is more valuable.
Replicate realistic conditions where possible: a defined time, no interruptions, no reference material and a clear finish point. Afterwards, review the questions in groups. Were errors clustered around a single content area? Did they arise when legal, ethical and clinical issues overlapped? Did you change correct answers because you second-guessed yourself?
This review should lead to a targeted action. If timing is the issue, practise moving on from questions that cannot be resolved quickly. If uncertainty is the issue, return to a decision framework rather than collecting more disconnected facts. If the issue is applying knowledge to work, use cases that require you to write or verbalise a practical recommendation.

Practise the professional judgement behind the answer
MFOM preparation is not separate from becoming a safer, more capable Occupational Medicine practitioner. The strongest revision has a direct effect on consultations, reports and conversations with managers and workers.
When studying a case, consider how you would explain your recommendation to the employee and what information an employer genuinely needs. Consider confidentiality, consent, the limits of your evidence and what would change your advice. This is where technically correct knowledge becomes defensible practice.
Be wary of absolute thinking. In Occupational Medicine, the answer often depends on exposure intensity, the essential demands of the role, the reliability of controls, current function and the availability of adjustments. A well-reasoned response acknowledges those factors without becoming vague.
As the examination approaches, narrow your focus. Keep revisiting high-yield frameworks, your error log and questions that initially challenged you. Protect sleep, maintain a realistic routine and avoid using the final days to absorb large volumes of unfamiliar material. Calm, organised reasoning is a genuine examination skill.
The aim is not to know every fact in isolation. It is to develop the confidence to meet a complex workplace scenario, identify what matters and make the next sound professional decision.
